Volunteer on Our Prison Crusades to Columbia, SC

group crusade

SCM staff and volunteers travel to Columbia, SC on a quarterly basis for a weekend outreach event.  We minister in over 13 different adult and juvenile prisons within the Columbia area.  Our Crusade weekend begins Friday afternoon and ends Sunday.  We have services in the facilities Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning.  Volunteers can attend all weekend or a portion of the time.

We have volunteers who preach, share testimonies, sing, and pray.  Regardless of your gifts and talents, God can use you in a mighty way.  First time volunteers usually play an observation role during their first time visit.  This allows you to become comfortable with the environment and get your feet wet, so to speak.  If you have specific talents you would like to share, please let us know.

All volunteers stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Columbia/Harbison (434 Columbiana Drive Columbia, SC  29212).  Our volunteer coordinator will make reservations for you.  The price of the hotel room is $79 plus tax per night.  This includes a hot breakfast each morning.  You pay for your hotel upon arrival.  The hotel accommodations are very nice.  Two double or king size bed rooms are available.  The staff are very friendly and great to work with.  The hotel has a restaurant in the lobby and snacks are often provided free of charge in the sitting area.

Crusade dates for 2016: March 4-6, 2016; June 3-5, 2016; August 26-28, 2016; and December 2-4, 2016.

How to Become a Crusade Volunteer

1) Sign up for the Crusade event you choose to attend.  To do so click here.  Every volunteer who plans to attend MUST sign up online.  We do not accept registration through email or over the phone.

2) Complete online training – To do so click here.  Once online training is done, you must mail or email a copy of your completed test.  You can mail it to PO Box 556 Monroe, NC 28111 or email it to safercommunitiesministry@gmail.com.  Online training MUST be completed before you attend the crusade.  If you have completed online training to become of volunteer in the UC Jail, you do not have to do it again for the Crusade.

3) Attend SCDOC training – In order to gain access to adult facilities in South Carolina, you must be trained by a SC Chaplain and have a background check conducted through SC.  Outside background checks are not permitted.  Once the training is completed, you will have volunteer access to adult facilities in SC for three years.  SCDOC training is conducted during the Crusade weekend.  We hold this training one to two times per year.  If you have not completed this training, you can still volunteer on our Crusades.  However, you will be assigned to a juvenile facility.  Once you register online, our Volunteer Coordinator will email you with further details for SCDOC training.

**Once you register, you will receive an email with further details for the Crusade.  If you have questions, email us at safercommunitiesministry@gmail.com or call our office at 704-283-3573.  We look forward to volunteering with you!
