Volunteering in the Union County Jail
SCM has a dynamic group of volunteers that minister in the Union County Jail. We have volunteer groups that come in weekly and monthly. We are always looking for volunteers to help spread the Gospel to inmates.
Volunteer Options:
1) Join a Bible Study Group – We have many experienced Bible Study groups that come in on a regular basis. These group sessions last anywhere from an hour to two hours. Volunteers teach Bible lessons, as well as pray and spend time with inmates. Bible studies are held during the week and on weekends as well.
2) Teach Life Skills – Our Chaplains teach Life Skills Classes to both male and female inmates. This 7 week class teaches inmates skills that can be used in everyday life. We also focus on developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Topics include budgeting, job hunting, resume writing, effective communication, etc. If you are well trained in a specific topic area, you could become a guest teacher and teach a lesson in your field of expertise.
3) Administrative Duties – It takes a lot of work and planning to ensure a ministry is ran properly. If you have administrative skills, we are always in need of volunteers to help in the office.
4) Event Planning and Set Up – SCM has several events/fundraisers throughout the year. As some of you may know, it takes a lot of time and effort to make sure these events are a success. We are always looking for volunteers to help plan, promote, and/or set up for SCM events.
How to Become a Volunteer
In order to become a SCM Volunteer in the Union County Jail, you will have to go through training and have a background check. To become a volunteer, follow the below steps:
1) Attend a volunteer training session.
- Each training session is held at the Union County Jail in the Magistrate’s Office Conference Room (3344 Presson Rd. Monroe) from 7-9 pm.
- You must arrive on time and bring your driver’s license with you.
- If you plan to attend training, email our Volunteer Coordinator, at safercommunitiesministry@gmail.com to reserve your seat.
- Training Sessions for 2017: August 17, 2017 and October 26, 2017.
2) Conduct training. safercommunitiesministry@gmail.com.
3) Pass a background check – You will fill out a background check form when you attend your training session. The background check will be conducted by jail staff. Outside background checks are not permitted. If you have a record, this does not mean you will automatically be disapproved. We have many influential volunteers with records.
4) Fill out necessary paperwork and choose volunteer area – All of this will be completed during your volunteer training session.
5) Receive a badge and be assigned a group – Once you have attended training, completed online training, filled out all paperwork, and passed a background check, you will be given a volunteer badge. You will also be put in a volunteer group (unless you are helping in the office or with events). Volunteers are not allowed to come in the jail alone. You must be in a group.
